Discover the best way to digitise and commercially exploit the diverse and enormous array of assets that make up the Telegraph‘s 150 year old archive
Aim:
Digitise The Daily Telegraph’s enviable 150 year newspaper archive to deliver incremental revenue and usable editorial assets.
What I did:
I managed the pitch and RFP process for The Telegraph’s print archive with a mix of technology platforms, outsourced scanning agencies,
traditional information / library platform managers.
The challenge was significant as The Telegraph had a mix of bound physical newspapers grouped
in volumes, some digital PDFs (mid 1990’s onwards), microfiche reels and pre scanned assets. I had to assess the whole mix of assets and the risk of
any damage to heritage materials which were the property of the owners. As well as liaising with our legal team, I was quickly familiarised with
requirements from our insurers, risk assessors, outsourced storage facilities managers, and the delicate world of handling historic material and
valuable archives.
I managed the business case, internal rationalisation for the digitisation project and the whole contract and delivery of final
digital files internally to editorial and externally with the client.
The client’s aim was to offer The Telegraph’s amazing 150 year archive to be
included in an academic research database with a subscription model as the revenue source.
Results:
client successfully launched the archive to critical acclaim, project delivered ROI in expected timeframes, and The Telegraph editorial
team was able to access and publish “this day in history” galleries, as well as drive traffic by using previously un-discovered articles by the
likes of (war correspondent / columnist) Sir Winston Churchill. Revenue share model led to low cost and highly successful implementation.
